Evaluation Summary – Saving the Future 2.0 : Strengthening Community-Based HIV Prevention Interventions Among Young People Who Use Drugs in Vietnam

13 May 2026

In Vietnam, the use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), is rising sharply and has been associated with an increase in HIV infections.

The Saving the Future 2.0 project, led by the Supporting Community Development Initiatives Center (SCDI), sought to improve the quality of HIV-related interventions targeting young people aged 16 to 24 who use drugs, through a multidimensional approach integrating harm reduction, mental health support, and community leadership.

Implemented between 2020 and 2025 across seven provinces through a network of 20 community-based organisations, the project reached 9,305 young people who use drugs with differentiated services, strengthened the capacities of 17 community organisations, and supported 14 young leaders in designing and implementing peer education projects. The project demonstrated that harm reduction services can be effectively delivered at the community level by combining evidence-based mental health interventions with a rights-based approach. It also played a catalytic role in the development of new national guidelines on the treatment of ATS-related disorders. The evaluation highlights the project’s strong relevance, its meaningful results across all three stated objectives, and its leading role in piloting innovative approaches in Southeast Asia.
