Ten years of responding to field needs

Since its creation in 2011, L’Initiative has experienced a real increase in operational, financial and human power. It has deployed more than 600 expert missions and financed nearly 150 projects, and its strong complementarity with the Global Fund has helped strengthen the coherence of French investments in global health.

“Beyond the figures, the main success of L’Initiative over the past ten years has been to have created a rich ecosystem of French-speaking actors serving global health. By supporting actors in the field, L’Initiative allows them to structure themselves and perpetuate their actions.

Undoubtedly, the added value of L’Initiative is its in-depth knowledge of the field , of target populations and of community health actors, an essential level in the fight against these pandemics. The relevance and efficiency of L’Initiative on the ground is regularly reported to us by our partners and by our diplomatic network, in particular the regional global health advisors. In addition, the analyses of L’Initiative experts provide valuable insight into the strategies and investments to be implemented, which France carefully relays to the Global Fund Board of Directors.

The Initiative is committed to better country ownership of the challenges of the fight and to strengthening health systems. Thus, in view of the observed weaknesses of health systems, the Africa Health Initiative has been deployed since 2019. In response to the delay observed in the implementation of Global Fund grants in six countries, the aim is to make the link between pandemic response and strengthening health systems. Because to contribute to eradicating pandemics, we must further improve the impact of Global Fund grants , and focus on strengthening health systems, in terms of laboratories, human resources and mobilization of domestic resources.

These are all topics on which L’Initiative is available to support countries in the fight against the three major pandemics, preparation for future crises and achieving universal health coverage.”
