Evaluation summary – project to implement and assess a community-based antiretroviral treatment distribution model in Cambodia

19 March 2026

In Cambodia, KHANA piloted an innovative model for the community-based distribution of antiretroviral treatment for clinically stable people living with HIV, comparing it with multi-month dispensing in clinics. The project aimed to develop, pilot and evaluate this model, and to advocate for its scale-up.
Implemented at 10 sites between 2020 and 2023, the project involved approximately 2,000 beneficiaries in the community component, around 2,000 in the clinic component, and 82 dedicated community workers. It demonstrated the operational feasibility of the model despite the constraints linked to Covid-19.
The findings point to positive — though moderate — effects on retention in care, treatment success, mental health and stigma reduction, as well as a real capacity to produce robust data and scientific communications.
