Evaluation overview – PrEP for women: developing and implementing a modellable community-based intervention tailored to women most at risk of HIV
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), recommended by WHO and included in UNAIDS’ HIV response roadmap, has proven highly effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection and providing protection against the virus. However, in most countries of the Global South, its use remains limited due to low availability.
From 2020 to 2024, the Association de Lutte Contre le Sida (ALCS) and its partner ARCAD Santé PLUS and PILS promoted the rollout of PrEP in Mali, Morocco, and Mauritius for and with women most at risk of HIV (female sex workers, trans women, partners of people who inject drugs. To achieve this, the project leaders developed an innovative, tailored, and scalable community-based strategy, which also included an advocacy component to improve the political and health environment surrounding PrEP.
