PRESERV 2 builds on Phase 1 by strengthening access for children, adolescents and young people living with HIV and vulnerable populations to quality HIV and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services that take gender-specific needs into account, in the Centre and North regions of Côte d’Ivoire.
Context
Côte d’Ivoire has made significant progress in the HIV response, with national prevalence estimated at 1.68% in 2025, compared with 4.7% in 2005. However, significant disparities remain, and control of the epidemic among children, adolescents and young people living with HIV (CALYHIV) remains a concern: disengagement from care, treatment discontinuation, delayed or absent disclosure of HIV status, inadequate services and gender-related barriers (inappropriate opening hours, stigma, lack of a welcoming environment, etc.). Phase 1 of the project demonstrated the relevance of a clinical-community model, with 949 CALYHIV receiving follow-up care, an increase in viral suppression from 68% to 91% among the cohorts monitored, HIV-status disclosure to 604 CALYHIV, and 77 healthcare professionals trained. These results call for the model to be scaled up through better integration of gender considerations and SRH, particularly with regard to cervical cancer.
Description
PRESERV 2 operates in the regions of Bélier, Gbêkê, Hambol, Poro and Tchologo, with three complementary objectives:
- Ensure quality HIV services for 0–24-year-olds by strengthening the clinical-community link with a view to achieving viral suppression (training, structuring and psychosocial support);
- Ensure access to SRH prevention and care services for vulnerable girls aged 9–14 (mobile services, HPV vaccination promotion and vaccination, information and referral);
- Sustain the achievements through institutional strengthening, gender integration and differentiated care for adolescents and young people (capacity-building, monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholder engagement).
Impact
PRESERV 2 aims to strengthen healthcare providers’ capacity to care for CALYHIV, provide holistic community support to promote treatment adherence and the social inclusion of CALYHIV, support their parents/guardians and siblings, and strengthen adolescents’ and young people’s access to SRH information and services.
