Evaluation overview – Access to quality HIV screening through community action, Mauritania

Evaluations 07/08/2023

In Mauritania, over 23% of men who have sex with men and 9% of female sex workers are living with #HIV – compared with 0.2% in the general population.

Faced with these hard-hit key populations, the association SOS Pairs Educateurs and the Association pour les gestionnaires du développement have joined forces to run a project entitled “Promoting key populations’ access to high-quality HIV testing through community action”.

Supported by L’Initiative to the tune of €284,000, this project ran from 2019 to 2022 in three geographical areas of Mauritania: Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and Rosso.

The project demonstrated, for the first time in Mauritania, the feasibility of demedicalised HIV screening for key populations.

Following its proven effectiveness, the procedure was included in Mauritania’s national protocol!
